THE SMALLEST TOWN IN THE WORLD (October 25, 2012)
Marko and I went to Hum today. It is only about some thirty kilometers from Motovun, anyway. The smallest town in the world, as the tourist story goes. And one of the places from which he himself hails. One eighth of him, to be a bit more exact. Ana Gržinić, his great grandmother on my mother’s side was born in Hum in the second half of the Nineteenth Century. As it happened, she gave birth to my mother at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, I was born around its middle, and he was born near its end. It took me a while to realize that one fourth of me comes from Hum, as well. The smallest town in the world, as I already said. The funny thing is that one can see oneself so much more clearly through someone else’s eyes. And especially if that someone comes from the same improbable roots.
