THE LEASH (October 11, 2012)
I am watching a young dog and its mistress in an outdoor café. In her mid-twenties, she loves it to bits. The dog responds in kind. Every now and then, she lets it off the leash. The dog wanders all over the place and ever farther from the mistress’ table. She calls after it again and again, but without any success. She gets up in the end, runs after the dog, and brings it back on its leash. A short while afterwards, she lets it off again. The dog wanders ever farther away as she calls its name ever more anxiously. And then she gets up and brings it back on the leash. Neither of them can learn the essentials of their relationship. On and off the leash forever. Love in a nutshell.
