In today’s mail I found the last issue of Connected, the Reading University’s magazine for alumni and friends. I have been receiving it as a retired professor, though. Well, an emeritus professor, to be exact. Four British gold medalists from the London Olympics are on the front cover. They are Reading alumni one and all. And then I flipped through the magazine itself. There is an article about the new vice-chancellor, who will take the university’s reins early next year. Much of his career has to do with the government. Another article is about a fine arts professor who designed the London Olympic medals. And there are many articles about Reading’s recent successes. A form came with the magazine requiring that I send information about myself either by post or by electronic mail so as to continue receiving the magazine. I was about to fill it in when I heard an inner voice: “Connected?” The verdict came soon enough: “Forget it!” I tore the form up at once and tossed it into the garbage bin. If the University of Reading wishes to stay connected, it knows exactly where to find me. At least for the time being.
