My No. 1 son’s visit has given me another opportunity to see Istria. The weather has been great, and so we covered quite some area around Motovun. Several things come to mind from the exercise. To begin with, roads are in a pretty good shape. Most of the roads are well paved and marked. New roundabouts regulate traffic rather efficiently. The signage is quite good, as well. Next, there are quite a few restaurants with decent food. The variety of food on offer is also high. The same can be said about wine. Then, the landscape is generally a joy to behold. Much of the peninsula is luscious green. Many hills and valleys are deserted in a pleasing sort of way. However, contemporary architecture and urban planning are appalling. New buildings are uniformly atrocious. They violently clash with the inherited urban fabric. Wherever my son and I went the last few days, I kept cursing architectural and urban planning horrors on our way. His visit only reminded me of my decision many years ago not to travel around Istria at all. I will have to stick to that decision in the future. I have already had my share of cursing everything in sight.
