THIS HEATWAVE (June 12, 2014)
It has been extremely hot and humid the last five or six days. The switch from fall to summer has been precipitous. Nowadays, this is known as a heatwave. But clouds are gathering around Motovun since about noon, and occasional rumbles of thunder can be heard from the northeast. A storm is coming our way, and I feel quite exuberant about it. My joy is tempered only by the knowledge that a storm could bring hail, which could harm the vineyards, olive groves, and orchards around the hilltown. Most of their owners I know well, and they are quite dear to me. So, I want a storm minus hail. A tall order, to be sure. But I am amazed at my towering emotions. I want this heatwave to end, and I want it to end as soon as possible. As well as by a show worth watching. The coming storm will bring a drop in temperature without fail. Alas, this is how the rest of the summer will look: so many heat waves cut short by so many violent storms. Each and every time, though, the gathering clouds will bring loads of joy.
