“WHY POLLING FAILS” (June 12, 2014)
Thus The New York Times today. “Data isn’t enough,” the newspaper elaborates. “We must listen to voters, not just measure them.” Well put. Very well, indeed. But how do you listen to voters? Snooping on them is always available, and especially with so many social networks in service, but this is off limits in a civilized world, one would hope. Although I skipped the article, for it struck me as barking up the wrong tree, it started me thinking. For what is democracy if not “measuring” voters? As witnessed by any voting procedure invented to date, it is certainly not about “listening” to them. Still, this is the main problem with democracy from its origins to this day and age. And it will never change. From start to finish, democracy is about measuring rather than listening. Once a community becomes too big for listening, it turns to measuring at best. Tertium non datur. The only way to return to listening is through a complete and total dismemberment of the Behemoth in front of us. And it loves data in any shape or form. Luckily for us all, climate change promises much by way of listening.
