Downhill mountain biking is an established discipline by now. Races are held on steep and rough terrains that often feature jumps and all manner of obstacles. As of late, downtown biking is becoming a rage in many parts of the world where hilltowns exist. The Youth Association of Motovun has thus come up with Motovun Downtown, a bicycle race that starts on the lower square and ends on Kanal in the foothills. The steep and narrow streets covered with cobblestones are hard enough to navigate, but there will be several jumping ramps along the way, as well. The first such event will take place this weekend, and preparations are in progress. Quite a number of youths from Motovun are in the media right now. Both men and women, they appear on many a television show heralding the race, which everyone among them hopes will become a cherished tradition. And all this delights me no end. Although I am not crazy about downtown biking as such, I am very happy to see our youths working together. The municipality has provided them with the requisite resources, but their cooperation is no less than exemplary. They already have a website dedicated entirely to the race (www.motovundowntown.com). Many of them meet at Marko’s nearly every day to discuss what remains to be done, and I marvel at the way they talk and laugh. I know most of them since their tender age, and I am quite proud of them. Deep down, I am convinced that they could work together on any project important to the small community. And that is the key to the future, I am convinced.
