THE MISMATCH (June 1, 2014)

Just before going to sleep last night, I discovered an error in my writing record. The two spreadsheets that track every piece of writing and every addendum over thirty-nine years did not match. Although the difference was in only one piece of writing or addendum out of the total of nearly eighteen-thousand, I could not figure out what was actually wrong. Thus I had hard time falling asleep. Each time I woke up in the middle of the night, I started thinking about the possible causes of the mismatch. The first thing I did when I got up in the morning was to return to my record. It took me at least three hours to figure it out at last. As it turned out, I did not record one of the addenda written this year in one of the two spreadsheets. Having fixed it, I feel whole again. But I am also aware of the dangers ahead. When I am in Zagreb, I have only my laptop with me. The desktop remains in my study in Motovun. Every time I return home, I must make sure to record in my desktop every single piece of writing that is in my laptop. If I am not careful, I will have a crisis like the one last night. Perish the thought.
