“WHY ANTIBIOTICS ARE MAKING US ALL ILL” (June 1, 2014)

Thus The Guardian today. “Scientist Martin Blaser argues that we are suffering from new wave of ‘modern plagues’ such as obesity and asthma because we have destroyed the naturally occurring bacteria in our bodies,” explains the newspaper. Well spotted. The article by the intrepid scientists misses one important bit, though. We have not only destroyed the “good” bacteria in our bodies, but we have also made the “bad” bacteria more resistant by clobbering them with antibiotics. Each time, a few of them survive and become even tougher. To wit, the overuse of antibiotics has resulted in ever-more sturdy bacteria that are pernicious to our health. And all this is the result of the scientific “revolution” that has changed the world around us in only a few generations. What Blaser offers in the article is more science, as well. Dead wrong. Assuming the decline of both science and civilization in the coming years, which makes quite a bit of sense on account of the devastating effects of climate change, we will all be the better for it. The human species is too stupid to intervene in natural processes, and especially those that have to do with bacteria. Stupid as they are, they will outwit us in every game. Including survival on this godforsaken planet.
