RECOGNIZING LONDON (March 13, 2014)
Photographs of London surprise me ever more often. The last time I walked around the city was in 2003, and this is how it remains in my memory. The Gherkin was completed the same year, but I have not seen it completed. And a whole slew of tall buildings appeared afterwards. For instance, the One Churchill Place was completed in 2004; the Ontario Tower and the Willis Building in 2007; the Broadgate Tower and the Pan Peninsula East and West Towers in 2008; the Strata in 2010; the Heron Tower in 2011; the Shard in 2012; and Saint George Warf Tower in 2013. Many more tall buildings are under construction or on drawing boards, as well. Soon enough, I will have hard time recognizing London from photographs I happen to come across. I am not complaining, though. Let London grow to the sky as long as I am not there to witness the spectacle. Memories of the city in my own time remain close to my heart. And they are changing hardly at all. As soon as I stop recognizing London in photographs, there will be surprises no more.
