But Britain is hardly alone in this regard. Given continuing economic troubles even in the “rich” world, as well as ever more dramatic changes in the weather, genetically modified food will flood the market soon. And profit levels for the few companies licensing it across the globe will be palatable enough. The only people who will be able to afford organic food will be dropouts with their own gardens close at hand. Having trimmed their consumption to the bone, they will eat well, at least. As for the rest, conundrums will multiply. One good day, genetically modified food will seem like a godsend. The alternative will be hunger. And worse. Much worse.
