ADDENDA, ADDENDA (March 13, 2014)

Today is a special day. Having just written an addendum to a piece written last month, I realized that I now have exactly two-thousand and five-hundred addenda extending close to fifteen-thousand pieces written over thirty-nine years. According to my records, that is roughly seventeen percent of my magnum opus. And addenda are the glue that holds my Residua together. Many of them reach decades back, and some go all the way to the beginning. Looking over my record, I can only hope that the share of addenda in my writings will grow over time. This has been my goal for years, too. In the fullness of time, I can imagine myself writing nothing but addenda. Although this is a farfetched ideal, this is precisely what one would expect of ideals, anyhow.

Addendum I (December 15, 2015)

The ideal of writing nothing but addenda is still with me twenty months later. In fact, it is getting stronger and stronger with the passage of time. I am thus happy to report that I have written more than five-hundred addenda since this piece was written. This year has been amazing in terms of the number of addenda written, of which there will be close to four-hundred by the end of the year. A new and amazing record, this. And the number of addenda written over forty years is now well past three-thousand. Simply put, I am on the right track regarding my reported ideal. Farfetched as it undoubtedly is, it is ever closer to my heart. Although I am not eager to set any new records ever again, for there have been way too many of them as of late, the way forward is abundantly clear. Addenda, addenda…

Addendum II (February 19, 2017)

As of late, the explosion of addenda in my writings is amazing to behold. I wrote nearly eight-hundred of them last year! Right now, there are almost four-thousand of them spanning forty-two years of writing. Amazing, indeed. But also disquieting, I hasten to add. And ever more so. My obsession with addenda threatens to despoil much of what I have written, too. Thus, it is high time to check this explosion. So far, I have been quite successful in my effort to reduce the number of pieces of writing, but the number of addenda is proving to be considerably harder to reduce. Every time I return to my Residua, another addendum pops up as if by magic. Whence this one, as well, it goes without saying. Having come across this piece and the first addendum purely by chance, I could not but add another one. In short, my reported ideal of writing nothing but addenda troubles me by now. For it strikes me as far from farfetched…
