The Victory Day parades in Russia are in the news. The biggest one was in Moscow, where more than eleven-thousand soldiers strutted about, but there was one in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, also. There were all sorts of weapons, old and new, on public display. True to form, Putin appeared at both parades. “We must remain worthy of our forebears’ deeds,” he said. “They fought to the death with the enemy, defending their native land, and they vanquished Nazism.” By the way, this is a reference to Ukraine, as well, but he did not mention the beleaguered country by name. “The Soviet people’s iron will, fearlessness, and steadfast courage saved Europe from enslavement.” He did not even mention America, it goes without saying. This Victory Day, the sixty-ninth, will surely be remembered far and wide. Putin’s Victory Day, to be sure.
