The referendum in Eastern Ukraine is over by now. And so is the creation of the so-called people’s republics in Donetsk and Luhansk. But I cannot stop myself from ferreting through the newest news from the beleaguered region. And so I come upon an article in The Guardian that ends with a superb assessment of the mess. A certain Andrei, a philosophy student from Donetsk who did not want to give his surname, said: “I haven’t voted, nor have any of my friends. It’s a referendum for idiots, organized by idiots.” Splendid. “Of course, I don’t want to be part of their absurd republic or join Russia. But having said that, I don’t like the new Kiev government, either.” And here comes his forthright conclusion: “Basically, we’re screwed.” Splendid, indeed. So much for democracy in any of its guises, too. Eastern Ukraine only brings the universal idiocy to the fore. Basically, we are all screwed, for voting of any kind is only for idiots, organized by idiots. Congratulations, Andrei!
