ON SOCIAL NETWORKS (May 12, 2014)
I have been preoccupied with the tribal mind as of late. But it not only my mind that is tribal (“My Tribal Mind,” April 26, 2014). Given that not too many generations separate us from the tribal world, every human mind is still tribal (“Individual, Tribe,” February 6, 2014). And I am lucky to live in a community the size of a tribe (“One with Motovun Afresh,” March 31, 2014). Although I have to control my feelings after many disappointments of yesteryear, I realize how lucky I am to live at this day and age in a tribal world of a few hundred people (“Tragedy, Farce,” May 11, 2014). But what about the denizens of huge cities like Tokyo, New York, and Istanbul? Bereft of a small community in which everyone knows everyone else, they are reduced to Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter, as well as a host of other social media supporting social networks. The tribal mind is still at work, but it is only spinning and thrashing about in vain, for there can be no technology for the real thing. A tribe is a tribe is a tribe.
