“IPCC: CLIMATE NEEDS RAPID CARBON EMISSIONS CUT” (November 2, 2014)
Thus The Guardian today. “UN body warns carbon emissions must be cut sharply and soon, and says solutions are available and affordable,” elaborates the newspaper. This comes from a report just released in Copenhagen by the United Nations’ International Panel on Climate Change. Rajendra Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, stressed the last point: “The solutions are many and allow for continued economic and human development. All we need is the will to change.” I wonder. He seems to be forgetting that he is addressing humans. Even if the will to change were there already, it would take an enormous amount of time to make the change itself. Say, a century. But the rest of the report is bristling with predictable jargon: “Climate change is expected to lead to increases in ill-health in many regions, including greater likelihood of death.” Elsewhere, the report warns: “Climate change can indirectly increase risks of violent conflicts by amplifying well-documented drivers of these conflicts, such as poverty and economic shocks.” Also: “Climate change is projected to undermine food security.” By and by, IPCC reports are becoming very like warning on cigarette packages. And yet, zillions of people around the globe are still smoking to their hearts’ content. Humans!
