“MERKEL CONSIDERS BRITISH EXIT FROM EU” (November 3, 2014)

Thus the Financial Times today. “Chancellor says UK is approaching ‘point of no return’,” elaborates the newspaper. And it all centers on immigration. Angela Merkel is warning David Cameron that any attempt on his part to restrict immigration from fellow member states will result in Germany withdrawing support for efforts to keep Britain in the European Union. In particular, the British prime minister has been considering quotas on migrants with low skills coming from the Union. Nigel Farage, the leader of the United Kingdom Independence Party, is gleeful about Merkel’s warning. The vaunted point of no return is exactly to his liking. And so on, and so forth. The gist of the article is that Germany is the Union nowadays. And vice versa. This has been clear for years, but Merkel’s warning makes it palpable. Nay, real. The Union itself is but a joke. The same holds for Brussels. Berlin is where the Union is centered, and anyone failing to understand this is welcome to leave it. Europa über alles!
