THE KITCHEN SINK (November 5, 2015)
My beloved is coming tomorrow, and I am bringing my house in order. Looking through her eyes, I discover all sorts of crap wherever I go. Kitchen, bathroom, and toilet floors are atrocious, and I do my best to clean them up. Our bedroom is covered with dust, but I will wait until tomorrow morning to vacuum it carefully. This morning, I unexpectedly dedicated myself to the kitchen sink. Water is pretty hard in Motovun, and it takes real effort to remove all the scaling from the sink. And so I scrubbed and scrubbed until it started shining again. When I was finished, I marveled at my accomplishment. The sink looked almost like new. But then I realized that everything around it now looked pretty dismal by comparison. Having cleaned the kitchen counter, I had to stop myself in my tracks. There is no end to cleaning, I realized. If I wanted to bring my house in order to my beloved’s satisfaction, it would take me days, and maybe even weeks. Thus I focused on the bathroom and the toilet, as usual. Alas, the kitchen sink was but an unnecessary distraction. As well as a misguided gauge of the pitiful state of my kitchen. Well, the entire house.
