ON FORCING EVOLUTION (November 4, 2015)

If humans could improve their genes, what would they go for? Put a bit more crassly, assuming that the science was available, what sort of genetic improvement would people put their money into? The first thing that comes to mind is longevity. Combined with everlasting youth, it would surely attract plenty of dosh. Next is line would be health. Especially for men, it would be closely followed by sexual prowess. For women, it would be physical beauty, I would guess. And greater intelligence would perhaps appear at the bottom of the list, if it would appear at all. Most people are quite happy with their intelligence, anyhow. Besides, they would not wish to spend their precious money on more of it. In short, forcing evolution is not likely to take humans very far. Even if it were entirely possible, the money would go for silly things rather than improving the lot of the entire species, and in the long run. To wit, forcing evolution may be possible, and resources for it may be at hand, but forcing it in the right direction demands something that humans cannot possibly come up with at this stage of their evolution: the intelligence required for guiding the endeavor toward indefinite survival of the entire species. Indeed, who in the world would put good money into something as boring as this?
