THE DISGUST (January 14, 2015)

Whenever I browse through my writings, I bump into many a piece that more or less explicitly conveys my disgust with the human species. Either specific or general, the sentiment can be spotted time and again. It spans many a year, as well. In an attempt to pinpoint the year when it started blossoming, I first thought of 2003. As soon as I retired, I started feeling fortunate not to have much to do with my fellow humans. But many of my earlier pieces of writing showed me wrong soon enough. Then I thought of 1991, when the civil war started in former Yugoslavia. Although I long expected the breakup, the horrors surprised me nonetheless. Still, the disgust could be gleaned in many even earlier pieces of writing. It did not take me long to realize that it originates in 1968, long before 1976, when my writing project started taking shape. Having taken part in the student uprising in Belgrade, and having watched the uprising dissolve as miraculously as it arose, I experienced an ever-stronger disgust with the whole species. By and by, I realized that socialism is beyond its present capabilities. At this stage of evolution, it is best suited for capitalism. Accumulate, accumulate… The disgust explained.

Addendum (October 19, 2016)

Having come across this piece purely by chance, I find it very to my liking. Indeed, my disgust with the human species originates in 1968. And it is enough to walk through the crowd in any major city of the rich world to see that socialism is well beyond its present capabilities, not to mention communism. If Marx will ever get a chance, it will be after millions of years of relentless evolution. Returning to my disgust, though, I was twenty-two when it started taking shape. And it took forty-eight years for it to reach maturity, as it were. But mature it surely is by now. Which is why I relish my liberation earlier this year to the hilt. The only way to cope with the human species is to abandon thought at will and for as long as one wishes. Thus I can walk through any crowd with a serene smile on my face…
