YOUR GOOD DEED (November 14, 2012)

You spot a tiny fly in your wine glass. Its wings spread open and its legs pointing upward, it is lying on its back right on the surface. It looks drowned. Ever so gently, you reach for it with the tip of your index finger. You fish it out of the glass and give it a closer look. Still on the tip of your finger, the fly suddenly moves. It drags itself out of the pool of wine and stops when it reaches a patch of dry skin. It walks some more and stops again. And then it opens its wings and flies away. It is a nuisance, but you are still delighted by the tiny creature. Feeling like a savior, you try to follow it in its flight. Thrilled, you try to partake in its miraculous rebirth. It is gone, though. You will see it never again. And the fly could not care less about your good deed, if this is what it was. More likely, you were only curious.
