“PORTRAIT OF A RECESSION?” (November 14, 2012)

Thus The Independent today. “Sotheby’s art sale breaks record,” elaborates the newspaper. Indeed. Three-hundred and seventy-five million dollars worth of contemporary art was sold at a recent auction. And the winners are Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder, Yves Klein, and Andy Warhol, in that order. Rothko alone got seventy-five million dollars. Pollock followed with forty million dollars. And so on. “If you want to talk about the market being happy, healthy and well, well, here it is,” the newspaper quotes Tobias Meyer, auctioneer and worldwide head of contemporary art. “That’s probably about as good as it gets.” Indeed, once again. The only thing I would challenge in this article is the title. The Sotheby’s sale is a portrait of a depression, instead.
