WERNER HERZOG AND I, AGAIN (March 1, 2012)

Last summer I learned about Werner Herzog’s three-dimensional documentary about the Chauvet Cave in France (“Werner Herzog and I,” June 28, 2011). I was quite disappointed by what I had learned, though. But I saw the documentary last night at the Zagreb International Documentary Film Festival. Once again, I was quite disappointed, this time for real. He goes on and on about all sorts of things, but he manages to miss every single thing that draws me to cave art. Every single thing! And that is quite an achievement on his part, no doubt. My most sincere congratulations, Herr Herzog!

Addendum (March 24, 2012)

As soon as I finished the first piece about Herzog, I sent it to him via the feedback function on his own website, which is easy enough to find on the World Wide Web. That was in June 2011, or nearly nine months ago. As soon as I finished the second piece, I sent it to Herzog once again. That was a bit less than a month ago. But I have not heard from him or his people on either occasion. Not a word. Which gives me a feeling that something is not as it should be. He is a dash too quiet for my taste. Perhaps he is ill? Or maybe just tired out? One way or the other, he strikes me as a man of the past. I hope that I am wrong, though. My very best wishes, Herr Herzog!
