VERY FOREIGN (September 10, 2012)
As I am listening to a compact disk with Pakistani music, I become curious of the music I have been listening to lately. In addition to the one that is playing as I am writing, on top of the pile next to my music machine there are disks with music from India, Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt. I look at the remaining disks in the pile, and the very same countries pop up again. In terms of the number of disks, of which there are about a dozen, India comes squarely on top. This is what I have been listening to for the last year or maybe two. An honest record, as it were. And there are hundreds of disks in several places around the house. I wonder whether police inspectors go through piles of disks with the music their suspects listen to most often. It would be a useful exercise, I would say. In my case, I would immediately be suspect of foreign origin. Very foreign, indeed. Can one be suspect of anything worse than that in today’s world, I wonder?
