MIGHTILY ENLARGED (September 10, 2012)

Wasps often come to my wine and beer glasses, as well as to pitchers and bottles next to them. Sometimes they go for the drink, and on occasion they even drop into it. I save them whenever I can. But they often hover in strange places, where one would not expect them to find anything of interest. Places like these are the spherical bits of glasses, pitchers, and bottles. This has puzzled me for a while, but it has just crossed my mind that this is where wasps can see their reflections mightily enlarged. To them, their own reflections in convex mirrors must look like giants of their own kind. They lose interest rather quickly, though. I assume this is because there is neither sound nor smell to the prodigies in front of their eyes. For what it is worth, this hypothesis strikes me as plausible enough. You can fool some of the wasps all of the time, and all of the wasps some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the wasps all of the time.
