THIS SCORCHED SEASON (August 31, 2012)
It is raining at last. And thundering fiercely. So far, lightning is landing only on the neighboring hills. When it hits dry bushes, flames appear for an instant. Luckily, they are doused by the rain a moment later. Last night it looked as though it would start raining in a few short hours, but it actually started late this morning. The rain remains kind of unconvincing, though. There have been a few brisk showers, but it only drizzles most of the time. The land around Motovun is so parched that it needs much, much more. Even if it continues like this for a few days, however, the drought will finally be over. But many plants of special importance in these parts have suffered quite badly already. Wine will be scarce. And so will olive oil. Many fruits have also been affected. Still, every drop of rain is welcome. Without it, vines and trees entire are in danger, not only their fruits. As I write, another shower has started in earnest. A downpour, no less. Gosh, I can already hear a stream gurgling down Borgo. Thundering is getting closer and closer, as well. Good omens this scorched season.
