I just went to the spreadsheet with my writing statistics and made a simple calculation. First I calculated the difference between the total number of pieces written last year, which broke all records, and the number of pieces written this year. And then I divided the result with the number of days left this year. To reach the same total as last year, I would have to write a bit less than three pieces a day till the end of the year. A tall order, for sure. Crestfallen, I checked the date last year when I had as many pieces as today. As it turns out, it was September 28. That means that I am a bit less than a month ahead of my record. Actually, I hoped I was doing somewhat better. Even more crestfallen, I decided to write yet another piece about my pitiful ways. There are many such already, and they all mock my fascination with the quantitative side of my life project, but at least they add to the number of pieces written. Phew! Dear reader, expect many more revelations of this sordid ilk till the end of the year. My sincere apologies well in advance.

Addendum I (September 1, 2012)

I just returned to my spreadsheet and made another simple calculation. I divided the number of pieces written in the first eight months of this year with the number of days already behind us. As it turned out, so far I have written about three and a half pieces a day on the average. If I continue writing at this pace, which is a perfectly reasonable assumption to make at this stage, I will come up not only with last year’s record, but with a new record, as well. There! In short, all is well on the quantitative side.

Addendum II (September 5, 2015)

My prediction was right on the money, it goes without saying. The new record did not last very long, though. I wrote three more pieces in 2014 than in 2012, and I ended up with no less than one-thousand and four-hundred of them. But that is the very last record of this kind, and no kidding about it. The only new record I am considering at this stage has to do with the number of addenda. If I continue writing them at the current pace, I will surpass the record of two-hundred and twenty-four of them written in 2000, and by a wide margin. Oh, I love addenda! But I hope this will mark the very end of my fascination with the quantitative side. Come what may, I will fight all new records tooth and nail. From now on, I will dedicate myself to the qualitative side only. Period.
