THE WEATHER, STUPID! (November 6, 2012)

After several days of miserable weather, the sky opened yesterday around noon. The clouds disappeared as if by magic. And it was sunny until sundown. There are some misty clouds today, but it is quite wonderful still. Like yesterday, it is surprisingly warm, as well. Nevertheless, Motovun is deserted. Not a soul in sight. Tourists that crowded the hilltown even while it was raining are gone. Last Sunday was the last day of the tourist season, indeed. Bus tours are no more. Special deals have expired. And all this because of some stupid dates determined way in advance. There is a cutoff point in the calendar that no-one can cross even though everyone keeps talking about ways and means of prolonging the tourist season. All that is needed in Istrian tourism is greater flexibility, as well as some cooperation with meteorologists. Climate change offers a wonderful opportunity to stretch the season all the way to Christmas and beyond. On top of special deals, bouts of marvelous weather are all that is needed to lure people to the peninsula. The weather, stupid!
