THE TURKEYS (April 23, 2012)
Two women in their late teens or early twenties are giggling and giggling next to my table in an almost empty café. Sounding very like turkeys, they are good friends, no doubt. But they grow serious at some point. And over Facebook, of all things. “I tagged you immediately!” one of them says indignantly. The other one is not convinced: “You didn’t make clear you liked how I commented the picture!” Although the giggling resumes soon enough, and how, it is quite clear that Facebook friends can benefit from an occasional face-to-face encounter. Many a friendship can get tangled pretty badly on account of mishaps with tags and likes. As well as many other features of the vaunted social network. Be that as it may, the turkeys next to my table left the café perfectly happy with their friendship. Back to Facebook, as it were.
