THE SUNRISE INITIATIVE (August 30, 2012)
Unusually, this morning I woke up early and could not go to sleep again. It was just past seven o’clock. Having twisted and turned for a while, I finally had enough and got up. One benefit of getting up early on a sunny day is that you can see the shadow of the Motovun hill projected onto the Mirna valley below. It looks like an Aztec or Mayan pyramid with a flat top. The tower is perfectly visible. And so are the fortifications. Even the cypress trees around the cemetery at the bottom of Gradiziol are perfectly visible. The projection is a rare joy, at least for me. I usually wake up too late to see it. I have witnessed many a breathtaking sunset in Motovun, but few sunrises. Perhaps it is time to dedicate a bit more attention to the latter. It would take an effort, but it would be well worth it. The sunrise initiative, to give it a lofty name.
