THE NEXT FOUR YEARS (November 7, 2012)
It is interesting to watch the stockmarkets today, a special day by all counts. At the announcement of Barack Obama’s victory this morning, they went up. Briefly. And then they plummeted. All around the world. Across the board. Now, stockmarkets are neither here nor there when it comes to wisdom, but they surely are about something. What could it be? Well, the future, economic and otherwise. If the stockmarkets are to be trusted, the next four years will be hell. Or worse. And now it is kind of official.
Addendum I (November 9, 2016)
As ever, it is interesting to watch the stockmarkets a day after presidential elections in the States. After Donald Trump’s yesterday’s victory over Hillary Clinton, stockmarkets are “surprisingly” calm. And this is what the best newspapers on offer have to say on this score. Surprisingly? Well, hardly. After all, the winner is one of them. The Donald, no less. Turbo capitalism keeps lurching forward…
Addendum II (November 23, 2016)
Well, well. A few days after the elections, the stock markets got no less than jubilant. A fortnight later, this is still the case. One way or another, Trump is the hero of turbo capitalism. And the investors in the States are celebrating their victory, as it were. In their minds, they finally have one of their own at the helm. This was unimaginable only a few years ago. As for the future, it is anyone’s guess. One thing is sure, though, and that is the tycoons like Trump are not meant to be in the lead of countries like the States. This is the mother of all precedents. Fingers crossed.
