THE GREATEST WEAKNESS (August 29, 2012)

Looking up the crowns of tall chestnut trees on the hotel terrace on a windy afternoon, I am enjoying the movement of branches above me. The closer to the top, the more they sway. Branches lower down sway less and less. The trunk appears to be immobile. Which is why trees break close to the ground when the wind gets to be too strong for them. Rather than losing leaf by leaf or branch by branch, they topple down entire. Strength is the greatest weakness. And not only among good old trees.
