GUARANTEED! (August 29, 2012)
When people in Croatia complain about something or other, they often end on a positive note of sorts. “Anyhow,” they like to conclude their grumbling, “it’ll be better.” Whenever I hear this expression, I nod vigorously. “It will,” I like to add, “it surely will!” I have something entirely different in mind, of course. To wit, I believe that death will resolve all our problems. And it is sure to come. At length, we will be absolved one and all. As of late, my enthusiasm is also getting more pronounced. Whenever anyone says that it will be better, I nod with ever-greater vigor. I get kind of ecstatic, too. Which started me wondering about it all. In these parts, few people believe in death. Real death, that is. People in Croatia hope for heaven and fear the horrors of hell, but there is no death for them. They cannot even imagine that every rebirth is punishment. Or that death is the only reward for all the crap that life brings. As for me, though, there are no doubts about death. None whatsoever. It is nothing but a reward. For all and sundry, too. There is neither heaven nor hell. There is no rebirth, either. Pure inventions. No matter how we live, it will be better sooner or later. Guaranteed! And there can be no doubt about it in my mind any longer. Sinners and saints, rejoice!
