THE GRAY PATCH (December 22, 2012)

Now that the tourist season is over, many cafés in Motovun are closed. Lately, Benjamin’s restaurant doubles up as a café in the evening. Quite a number of local people assemble there in front of the fireplace, which provides quite a bit of comfort on a cold day. When Pero Učkar walked in yesterday evening, I teased him a bit about a patch of gray hair just above his forehead. It has been there as long as I know him, but it is growing and spreading. The interesting bit is that it looks very like Africa. The Middle East and the Arab Peninsula are starting to take shape as of late, though. “Hey,” I giggled as I pointed at the gray patch, “It looks as though the war is spreading!” Pero just shrugged his shoulders. “If that is so,” laughed Benjamin, “there is World War III in your case.” We all laughed. “Exactly,” I nodded as I rubbed my gray hair, “World War III, no less.”
