THE DREAD OF DIFFRACTION (September 7, 2012)
As it passes through a tiny rectangular slit in the closed shutters of the window to the right of my chair at the dining table, a nearly horizontal ray of sunlight projects a sizable circle onto the doorframe of the kitchen door right behind me. Diffraction. While I am admiring the nearly flawless circle, it is suddenly cut in half. Thick curly hairs appear on the lit part of it. Startled, I follow the ray of light to my raised right arm, the elbow of which is resting on the table. The spread of light makes me look like a chimpanzee. Come to think of it, the projected circle could well have fallen on the wall behind the door, in which case I would have looked like a gorilla, instead. The dread of diffraction, to coin a phrase.
