THE CHAFF (November 4, 2012)
According to Google Analytics, about a quarter of visitors to my Residua website drop out after visiting the very first page. That is, the motto from The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night. Hooray! I have been enchanted by the motto from the very beginning, but now I have an additional argument in support of my felicitous choice. Namely, it weeds out the wrong visitors. And that is precisely what a good first page should do: attract the right visitors and repel the wrong ones. The same goes for any book with respect to its readers, whence the very reason for a carefully chosen motto. The quicker the chaff is weeded out, the better. For the wrong visitors cannot but spoil anything they cast their eyes upon, let alone everything they breathe upon or even touch.
