ONE TIME TOO MANY (April 20, 2012)
In cafés across Croatia, people pay only when they are ready to leave. This they do on the odd chance that they will wish more than one drink in one sitting. Or that someone will join them at their table. Following the American habit, I pay as soon as I receive my drink. If I want another, I pay for it immediately, as well. And there is only a slim chance that anyone will join me. Anyhow, this spares me from getting the waiter’s attention one time too many. When will Croatians learn this clever trick? Perhaps only when the cafés learn to charge them for their drinks as soon as they receive them so as to spare their busy waiters from being called over one time too many. And waiters are ever busier as café owners learn the market ways. America is spreading quite fast, after all.
