I am in favor of Britain leaving the European Union. And I am also in favor of Croatia joining it. As I am a citizen of both countries, I must be contradicting myself. Hardly, for the two countries are pretty different. On the one hand, Britain has the British Commonwealth to rely upon. Most important, it is close to America, Canada, and Australia, which share the English language. Given Britain’s strengths in finance and trade, its economic future would be secure on the periphery of the Union. On the other hand, Croatia has nowhere to turn to. It can rely upon the Union and nothing but the Union. Countries that sprung from the breakup of Yugoslavia are a mixed blessing at best and a serious threat at worst. As tourism is the only viable sector in Croatia’s economy, closeness to the Union would be a safe economic bet, as well. In short, there is no contradiction in my position regarding the two countries. Besides, I am sure to remain a citizen of the Union on account of my double citizenship. And I am also sure to keep criticizing it for all its weaknesses, as well as praising it for all its strengths. From the inside, too.
