MUNCHING ON SOMETHING (January 25, 2012)
I often see a fat boy of about ten in the street. Whenever I spot him, he is always munching on something. Often enough he has a huge sandwich in one hand and a can of some fizzy drink in the other. As he is getting taller, he is getting fatter, as well. On occasion I wonder about his parents. They must have noticed the boy’s addiction to food. Why do they not direct it toward something less troublesome? A sport of some kind would surely be good for him. And so on, and so forth. But I just saw the boy together with his equally fat but not much taller mother. They were both munching on a huge sandwich. True to form, each of them held a can of some fizzy drink in the other hand. I rebuked myself at once for my silly thoughts about parenthood. What do I know about it, anyway?
