LUCKY TO BE OLD: FROM AN ELECTRONIC-MAIL MESSAGE TO ERIC DLUHOSCH (January 25, 2012)

Concerning the state of the planet, I am very much with you. The situation is awful. And I fear that it is getting worse at quite some pace. I am also with you when you say that you will “fortunately” not see the worst of it. That is exactly how I feel, as well. Things are likely to keep deteriorating over the next few decades, but the collapse of what we call civilization may take a bit longer than that. Although I occasionally feel fortunate to be witnessing the decline, the eventual fall cannot be wished unto anyone. Thus I would hate to be young in this world. Whenever I am surrounded by young people, I feel only pity for them. To wit, we are lucky to be old. Of course, I can only hope that I am wrong about all this, but hope is a threadbare notion nowadays.
