HER LAST NAME (April 22, 2012)

Everyone in our favorite restaurant in Zagreb knows both my beloved and me under her last name. This started innocuously enough, for she is the one who usually makes table reservations, but she is delighted by the situation no end. “One of the current Croatian ministers took his wife’s last name, too!” she likes to remind me whenever an opportunity arises. Even when I make a reservation in her presence, which happens only rarely, I use her last name. My beloved’s face lights up on such occasions. It is a joy to see her so happy. “You see how easy it is!” she grins. I am quite unlikely ever to change my last name, though. I have always felt blessed by its origin, its meaning, its brevity, and its straightforward pronunciation anywhere around the world. Alas!
