FOR SPECIAL GUESTS (September 14, 2012)

Having spent some time at home, I returned to the hotel terrace for late lunch. To my dismay, the place was pretty crowded. Seeing my discomfort, the head-waitress came along. After a few words, she offered me the garden in the back of the hotel. “For special guests,” she grinned solicitously. The garden is meant for hotel guests only, but I accepted her offer gladly. The terrace in front of the hotel, which I otherwise like very much, was not attractive at all at the time. I told her what I wanted to eat and drink, and headed for the garden. It was a bit windy, but completely empty. There was no-one in sight. I ate surrounded by swaying Cypress trees, through which I could see Kaldir in the distance. It did not take me long to think of the Polesini family, who used to own the palace behind me for centuries. On occasion, they must have enjoyed the garden, as well. But their burdens will forever remain a mystery to me, I realized. A lucky bastard.
