CROATIA, NEW ZEALAND (October 15, 2012)

The idea of leaving Croatia for good has a strong pull on me. It crosses my mind almost every day. I am dying to leave the country, in fact. There are several impediments to the realization of this idea, though. I am repelled by this one, but I am not attracted enough by any other country. Nothing draws me anywhere, that is. Although New Zealand is always in the back of my mind, and although I quite enjoyed meeting the few people I briefly met there during a single visit a decade ago, the main thing that attracts me there is the distance from the rest of the world. In this respect, New Zealand is indeed unbeatable. In addition, I do not know anyone there. And it has just crossed my mind that I would never get to know anyone there, either. As the few people I actually met struck me very like the British several decades ago, this seems to me to be a fair bet. Surrounded by people I could count with in hard times, but who would leave me in peace in the meanwhile, I would be free to live all by myself. Nobody would interfere with such wishes as long as I would not interfere with anyone else’s wishes in turn. Returning to Croatia, I can only regret everything that has come to pass since my arrival a decade or so ago. Would that I thought about it back then just like I am thinking about New Zealand right now. Perhaps I would not be dying to leave it at all.
