Just to be sure that I am well informed about world affairs, I regularly visit the online editions of a number of newspapers of international renown. This I do every day, including weekends, several times a day. Topmost among the newspapers are The Economist, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Guardian, The Independent, Der Spiegel, and Le Monde. It is thus interesting to note that a number of these newspapers get rather sluggish on weekends. The Economist, The Financial Times, and The Wall Street Journal report only exceptional news. But Der Spiegel is nearly dead on Saturdays and Sundays. It is as though the lights are turned off in the editorial office. “Clever Germans,” I catch myself mumbling under my breath on occasion, “they know how to take a well-deserved rest.” Would that eager readers like myself learned from them a thing or two.
