A SORE WOUND (October 28, 2012)

I have not seen Vojka Kotiga for a while, let alone talked to her at any length. I was at Benjamin’s this afternoon when she came in and joined a small group at my table. “It’s a bit of a surprise to see you in Motovun,” she chuckled teasingly. We started talking about my ever-longer stays in Zagreb, and I ventured into my litany about the shift: I spent thirty percent of the time there in 2009; fifty percent in 2010; sixty-four percent in 2011; and fifty-one percent so far in 2012. I explained that my beloved is the main if not the only attraction of the Croatian capital, but that Motovun also repels me ever more as years go by. “If you spend ever more time in Zagreb because this is how you like it,” she chuckled reassuringly, “everything’s for the very best!” As Motovun remains a sore wound in my perambulations, I have never thought of it in these straightforward terms. But it is good to listen to Vojka, for she is an eminently practical woman. Everything is for the very best, indeed.
