ANOTHER SNOW RECORD (December 10, 2012)
According to the hysterical media, Zagreb has achieved another snow record. The sort of storm that visited the city two days ago has not been seen for fifty-seven years. Everyone is staggered by this number. At sixty-six, I am hardly surprised. Although I was living in Belgrade at the time, I still remember the glorious snow that must have blanketed the Balkans entire, as is the case at present. It was a godsend for kids of all ages, of which there were plenty. As the erstwhile capital of Yugoslavia is hilly, we were on sleds, skis, and skates all day long every single day. The cold did not faze us at all. In fact, I do not remember it. But I remember plenty of snow that stayed put for a long while. Much of the winter was ours, in fact. If my memory is not playing tricks on me, few grownups complained, either. There were few cars around back then and people were still comfortable walking. Returning to Zagreb, there will be much wailing if the snow returns, as it is forecast to do. After fifty-seven years, people have no idea how to get around without their precious cars. What is even worse, there are few kids around to enjoy the snow.
