A DOUBLE CHALLENGE (June 29, 2012)

Unusually for Motovun, my house is freestanding. Also, it is close to the top of the Motovun hill. All year round, the house gets the sun from the east, south, and west. During the summer, though, it also gets the sun from the north twice a day−first in the morning, and then in the late afternoon. Freestanding as it is, the house is difficult to heat in the winter. Exposed to the sun from all sides, it is difficult to cool in the summer. A double whammy, to put it simply. Or a double curse. As I was thinking about my predicament, I suddenly felt a jolt. “Hey,” I could almost hear myself shout out loud, “think about it as a double challenge, instead!” Indeed, the trick is to relish the challenge rather than deplore it. “C’mon, summer!” I growled under my breath. “C’mon, winter!”
