“POLITICAL SCIENTISTS ARE LOUSY FORECASTERS” (June 23, 2012)
Thus the editorial of The New York Times today. “Academics aren’t better than chimps at predicting our political future,” runs a brief summary of the article. Although I could not care less about political science as such, I was delighted by the title at once. It did not take me long to figure out why. Drop “political” from the title and the summary, and everything sounds just right. “Scientists are lousy forecasters,” that is. Also: “Academics aren’t better than chimps at predicting our future.” Now we are talking. Political or otherwise, science has failed us chimps. And I say this as someone who has aspired to science all his life. Enough is enough. We are chimps, and we are lousy forecasters one and all. Period. Screw science, a mere varnish on the simple evolutionary truth.
