“I’M GROWING” (April 21, 2012)
Thus declares a big sign on a school close to my beloved’s apartment building. It appeared only while we were in Motovun a short while ago. The sign is painted rather than sprayed. The color of the letters fits the color of the building. The sign is surprisingly well proportioned. And it appears unhurried, too. All by itself, it confirms the message quite well. Which is why I kind of like it in spite of the fact that the façade of the school would look better without it. The kid who put the sign on the wall could be an interesting one. Someone to watch grow, as it were. On top of all this, I appreciate the sign because I share the spirit of the message. I, too, am growing, albeit spiritually, for lack of a better word. All the differences notwithstanding, the kid and I are on the same page. The sign is thus ours. Perhaps it should be slightly different: “We’re growing.”
