SALT (February 21, 2011)
It was a bit nippy yesterday afternoon, but it still felt like spring. Bursts of sunlight that came through shifty clouds made all the difference. This morning brought light snow, though. The weather is all over the place, but people appear to have had enough of the winter. By now, the spring is in high demand. And so are outdoor cafés. This morning I watched a waiter sprinkle salt around snow-covered tables, just to make sure that no-one would slip and fall on the ice. God forbid. A large box of the magic stuff was emptied in front of my eyes. Salt is cheap nowadays. And little is known about its effect on the sewers, rivers, and beyond. As I was watching the waiter, I was wondering about the impact of little things people like him regularly do by comparison with the much-maligned industrial pollution. Chances are that little things wreck more havoc on the environment than all the industries combined. But try telling this to the hapless waiter. It is only salt, anyway.
